UPDATE (16/10/24): Tonight’s works on the A7 south of Canonbie have been cancelled due to forecast heavy rain. The works will continue from the night of 17 October, with three additional road closures required from 19:30 to 06:00 on 21, 22 and 23 October, with the same diversion in place each night.
Overnight works for three weeks commencing Monday 30 September 2024
The A7 is set to benefit from an improved road surface south of Canonbie, with 15 nights of resurfacing works scheduled on Monday to Friday nights from 30 September to 18 October.
The works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland resurface 1.3km of carriageway on the A7 trunk road from the national border to north of the Canonbie B7201 junction.
Works will take place under a full road closure between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00 each night.
During these hours a signed diversion route will be in place. Road users travelling south on the A7 will be diverted off at the B720 junction, onto the B6357 to Kirkpatrick Fleming, the B7076 through Gretna, and then the A6071 to rejoin the A7 at Longtown. Northbound traffic will follow the same diversion route in reverse. This will add an estimated 16 minutes and 10.1 miles onto affected journeys.
Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.
Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “It’s essential for the safety of motorists and the workforce that we close the A7 while we resurface this stretch of road.
“We’ve scheduled the works at night to minimise disruption, however if you do need to use this route while work is taking place, our advice is to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time for your journey.
“We’re grateful to road users and local communities for their patience and understanding while we complete these improvements.”
