Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will complete Phase 2 of planned essential resurfacing on the A78 Irvine Road in Largs from Monday 18th November until Thursday 21st November 2024.

Phase 1 of this scheme was completed in October 2024, but the second phase of this work was postponed due to severe weather conditions resulting from Storm Ashley.

The work will be undertaken utilising a total closure of the A78 Irvine Road between Morrisons Roundabout and Springfield Gardens. Local access will be maintained northbound via John Street, and southbound via Anthony Road. From 10pm local access will be maintained northbound and southbound via Anthony Road with the use of temporary traffic lights to account from the tight turn from the trunk road.

All other forms of access/egress management for residents and businesses within the closure will be the same as previously communicated for Phase 2.

Daytime temporary traffic lights will be in place to allow for ironworks reinstatement on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th November, and this will be carried out prior to the new carriageway surface being laid. The remainder of the works will be completed using full overnight road closures between 8pm and 6am on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th November, with all works scheduled for completion and lifted by 6am on Thursday 21st November 2024.

No travel will be possible through the closure points.

During the full overnight closures, a signed diversion route will be in operation:

Southbound traffic will take the A78 northbound to Greenock and join the A8 at the Bullring Roundabout, continue to Newark Roundabout and take the third exit on to the A761 through Kilmacolm. Traffic will then be directed to turn left on to the B790 Houston Road and follow Bridge of Weir Road and the B789 Barrochan Road to Deafhillock Roundabout, taking the second exit and joining the southbound A737. Traffic will continue south to Beith and take the second exit at Manrahead Roundabout onto the B777, continue to Kilbirnie and take the A760 at Bridge Street towards Largs, where they will be able to re-join the A78 southbound.

Northbound traffic will follow the same diversion in the opposite direction.

HGV and any vehicles over 7.5T must use the signed diversion route when full carriageway closures are in place.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

Bus services will be escorted through the route by arrangement.

During these works the reinstatement of the roundabout markings on A78 Main Street, Largs will also be undertaken at the request of elected members.

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.

This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.
