A83 North of Inverary | Sea Wall Repairs

Inverary
27th of January 2025, 8:00am to 24th of March 2025, 6:00pm

Road users will benefit from enhanced protection as BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, prepares to carry out essential seawall repairs on the A83 north of Inveraray.

The project will involve dismantling and repairing three damaged sections of the seawall, with a focus on salvaging and reusing as much of the original material as possible. Key improvements will include installing guttering, repairing the concrete haunch, and extending this where necessary. These upgrades aim to strengthen the wall’s resilience, safeguarding the A83 from the damaging effects of wave action and harsh coastal conditions.

In accordance with the granted marine license, work is scheduled to begin on Monday 27 January and will typically take place between 8am and 6pm each day, although these hours may vary depending on tide times to maximise efficiency. The repairs are expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete, but the timeline may be affected by adverse weather or unforeseen repair requirements.

To protect both road users and workers, temporary two-way traffic lights and a 30mph speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the works. The lights will be coordinated with the traffic management already in place at Aray Bridge to help keep any delays to a minimum.

Access will be maintained at all times for emergency service vehicles.

Stakeholder consultations have been carried out to keep local communities and road users informed about traffic management arrangements.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s Northwest Unit Representative said: “This work on the sea wall will repair existing defects and enhance the protection offered at on the A83 north of Inveraray, greatly improving safety for road users.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these vital repair works.”

“We encourage road users to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”
