The A899 between the Livingston East and Dechmont Roundabouts will be closed in both directions between 20:00 and 06:00 on the nights of 7, 8 and 14 November, as part of the ongoing major project to refurbish the bridge carrying the motorway slip road above it. Access to the M8 Junction 3 eastbound on-slip will also be unavailable on these nights.
Lane closures will also be in place in both directions on the A899 from 9 to 14 November, to allow bridge works and installation of a safety barrier in the central reservation.
Since February 2023, Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland has been carrying out major maintenance works on the bridge that carries the M8 Junction 3 eastbound off-slip over the A899. The old bridge bearings have now been replaced and temporary works have been in place to facilitate concrete repairs and installation of cathodic protection. Lane closures have been in place on the A899 since January to accommodate these temporary works.
BEAR Scotland is now preparing to remove the temporary works and reinstate safety barriers and the road surface on the A899.
During closures of the A899, a signed diversion will be in place between Livingston East Roundabout and Dechmont Roundabout via the A899 Livingston Road, Houston Road, Deans Road and the A89, adding approximately six miles and twelve minutes to affected journeys.
Traffic that would be intending to join the M8 eastbound from the A899 will be diverted via Livingston Road, Houston Road and Deans Road and can then choose to take the A89 eastwards towards M8 Junction 2 or take the A89 westwards to join the M8 at Junction 3A.
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
Dave Bishop, BEAR Scotland Unit Bridges Manager, said: “The ongoing major works to maintain the structural integrity of this bridge have progressed well.
“To protect the safety of road users during these reinstatement operations it is essential that the A899 and the slip roads at M8 Junction 3 are closed, however we have planned these works to take place overnight to minimise travel disruption.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their ongoing patience during these essential works.”
Consultation has been carried out with relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans in advance.
