Police Travel Advice for Storm Eowyn Update

The Met Office has issued a RED Weather warning for WIND. As such, you should avoid travel on the roads in the following areas:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife (Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, Fife, Stirling)
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders (Dumfries & Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, Scottish Borders, West Lothian)
  • Strathclyde (Argyll & Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire)

Details:


Very strong winds associated with Storm Éowyn causing very dangerous conditions and significant disruption on Friday Southwesterly then westerly winds will rapidly increase from west to east Friday mid-morning onwards into the afternoon, with peak gusts of 80-90 mph fairly widely and perhaps up to 100 mph along exposed western coasts. This brings the risk of significant disruption to transport and power supplies as well as dangerous conditions outdoors. Winds will gradually ease through Friday evening.
 

  • Conditions for travel may be extremely dangerous with disruption and significant delays
  • If travel is absolutely necessary, be aware of the disruption in your area by checking Traffic Scotland and your council website, Facebook and Twitter/X
  • Roads should be kept clear for emergency services and essential road maintenance vehicles
  • Congestion caused by vehicles may restrict emergency services, recovery vehicles, gritters and snowploughs from providing essential assistance
  • HGV and bus drivers must assess how essential their journey is and reconsider the safety of continuing during extreme weather.
  • Where necessary, get advice from operational managers/supervisors before beginning or continuing with journeys
  • Always consider the consequences of driving when there is a warning to avoid travel

Further Warnings:
This RED warning runs in conjunction with an AMBER warning for WIND and two YELLOW warnings, one for WIND and one for SNOW.


Additional Warning One:
The Met Office has issued an AMBER Weather warning for WIND. As such, there may be a HIGH RISK OF DISRUPTION for road users in the following areas:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife (Angus, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Falkirk, Fife, Perth & Kinross, Stirling)
  • Grampian (Aberdeenshire)
  • Highlands & Eilean Siar (Highland)
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders (Dumfries & Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, Scottish Borders, West Lothian)
  • Strathclyde (Argyll & Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire)

Additional Warning Two:
A further YELLOW weather warning for SNOW which is effective from 6am until 11:59pm on Friday 24th January 2025 in the following areas:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife (Angus, Perth & Kinross, Stirling)
  • Grampian (Aberdeenshire, Moray)
  • Highlands & Eilean Siar (Highland)
  • Strathclyde (Argyll & Bute)

 

Additional warning Three:
A further YELLOW weather warning for WIND which is effective from 12am on Friday 24th until 3pm on Saturday 25th January 2025 in the following areas:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife (Angus, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Falkirk, Fife, Perth & Kinross, Stirling)
  • Grampian (Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray)
  • Highlands & Eilean Siar (Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland)
  • Orkney and Shetland (Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands)
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders (Dumfries & Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, Scottish Borders, West Lothian)
  • Strathclyde (Argyll & Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire,
  • East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire)
